Third Friday Contra Dance

Thanks to the fine folks at St. John's Episcopal Church in North Adams, we have a lovely hall for our monthly contra dance. St. John's is right next to the Post Office on Summer St, next to the Hundred Acre Parking Lot. All dances start at 7:00 and run until 9 or 10.

  • April 18: April Grant

We're a small and friendly dance, with a huge number of local musicians volunteering their time, and a bunch of callers who will basically work for gas money. We exist for, and are made of, the local community. As it should be.

We ask $5-$10 at the door, which covers a small caller's fee and some token compensation for St. John's for upkeep of the hall.

If you don't know what contra dancing is, then you should definitely come. We'll explain everything (it's not difficult), and you don't need to come with a partner. In brief, contra dancing is largely derived from New England barn dances, and is similar to square dancing. It's meant to be a fun, sociable, family-friendly kind of dance - if you can walk, you can contra dance. YouTube has lots of video clips if you want to see.
